This year the Adult Education Series is focusing on Exploring Scripture. We invite parishioners into a more active and dynamic understanding of Scripture, current Catholic thought in reading Scripture, and praying with God’s Word specifically the upcoming Lectionary Cycle B and St. Paul.

How Catholics Read and Understand Scripture and How Scripture affects our Daily Lives
Presenter:  John Donahue S.J.

A renowned Scripture Scholar, Fr. Donahue is a Research Professor of Theology at Loyola College of Maryland. He has written and taught extensively on issues of the Bible and social justice, beginning with “Biblical Perspectives on Justice,” in The Faith that does Justice (1977), and more recently “The Bible and Catholic Social Teaching: Will This Engagement Lead to Marriage?” in Kenneth Himes, ed. Modern Catholic Social Teaching: Commentaries and Interpretation (2005).

Nyumbani

NYUMBANI was founded by the late Father Angelo D’Agostino, SJ.  NYUMBANI (“home” in Swahili) provides homes and care for thousands of Kenyan families suffering from AIDS.

NYUMBANI has several initiatives:
  • NYUMBANI CHILDREN’S HOME cares for children until a definitive assessment of their HIV status can be made.
  • LEA TOTO (Swahili for “to raise a child”) is a community based outreach program that provides services to HIV+ children and their families.
  • VILLAGE is a self-sustaining community that serves orphans and elders left behind by the “lost generation” of the AIDS pandemic.

What it is to be Homeless on the Streets of DC?
Presenter:  Vince Keane, Co-Founder
Unity Health Care Inc.
Sunday, October 26, 2008: 10:10 – 11:20 a.m. in the Theater
Mr. Keane will discuss his experience with homeless men and women on the streets of Washington, DC and how that experience moved him to found and develop Unity Health Care, Inc. His company provides Primary Health Care to some 80,000 people in DC, 11,000 of whom are homeless.

The Room at the Inn highlights the Scriptural message John Donahue S.J.  spoke of in his presentation. This film gives us one man’s  experience of doing so. There will be time after the film for discussion.

Fr. Kevin Nadolski will lead us into the season of Advent as he looks back with us on the first steps we took on our Journey with the Homeless. He will then show us how to focus on what is Jesus' justice, and ask how we practice and pray over justice.
